This stroller-friendly trail only features an elevation gain of 95 feet, so it's a great trail to walk down if you're not looking for an intense workout. Due to the long straightaways on this asphalt trail, it is also ideal if you want to teach your kids how to ride a bike. 2. Fort Boonesborough Campground Loop Trail We also recommend the 0.9-mile Fort Boonesborough Campground loop trail at Fort Boonesborough State Park at 4375 Boonesboro Rd. This fun, easy trail is great for birders, and you can take beautiful pictures of the fort, creek, and birds, including Carolina wrens. Other birds you can expect to see here include: Ruby-throated hummingbirds Dark-eyed juncos Sandhill cranes Chimney swifts Pileated woodpeckers Red-tailed hawks Vultures If you want to tour the fort, you should keep in mind that it is not open to the public on Mondays or Tuesdays, and it will close for the year on October 29. If you want to walk your dog down this loop trail, you also should keep in mind that the fort is not pet-friendly. This state park is also popular among anglers. On the Kentucky River, you can catch catfish, bass, and bluegill. 3. Camp Catalpa Walking Loop The Camp Catalpa walking loop is also worth checking out. Camp Catalpa is located at 2200 Catalpa Loop Road, and it features a two-mile loop trail. Once you're done with your walk, there are plenty of other outdoor activities you can enjoy at this camp. For instance, it is a great place for picnicking. If you want to have a large family get-together, you can rent a shelter with a grill and four or eight picnic tables. There is also an 18-hole disc golf course. There are many fun trails you can hike along in the Richmond area if you have a reliable set of wheels. Here are a few of our favorite spots to take the family on a warm, sunny day. Fort Boonesborough State Park Fort Boonesborough State Park is the home of a frontier fort, founded in 1775 by Daniel Boone after the crossing of the Kentucky River. The fort itself has been painstakingly recreated, and is now a working fort, giving insight into the lives of the pioneers who lived there 250 years ago. The cabins are fully furnished, and you can watch the potter and the blacksmith at work here. There are plenty of things to do in the surrounding parkland, with opportunities for fishing, camping, boating, and hiking. We enjoyed the miniature golf course here, and there is a nice swimming pool complete with changing area near the fort. The gift shop has an excellent selection of souvenirs made by the craftsmen working at the fort. Fort Boonesborough is located at 4375 Boonesborough Road. Paradise Cove Aquatic Center Paradise Cove Aquatic Center is a fun-packed water park that's perfect for families. For older children and adults, there is a normal swimming pool with diving boards and swimming lanes where you can go to practice your strokes. The large central pool is the highlight of Paradise Cove, containing a shallow area for smaller children, and several rides and attractions. The two 40-foot water slides are very popular, and the whirlpool and family slide also attract many swimmers. We liked the kid's play area, featuring water sprays, a dumping bucket, and a climbing net. There are some nice food stalls and bathrooms here, and everything is very reasonably priced. Paradise Cove can be found at 239 West Main Street. Lower Howard's Creek Nature and Heritage Preserve The Nature and Heritage Preserve was founded in 2000 in order to protect the rare and endangered plants inside. It is situated inside a limestone gorge, and features some plants and wildlife of outstanding natural beauty. It's a great place to go for a family walk - if you decide to walk the full length of the trail, it's approximately 1.5 miles each way. The river and the stone walls of the creek are surrounded by forest, and it's easy to feel at one with nature here. Some animals that you may encounter in the creek include river otters, deer, and beavers. If you have time, we would recommend you take the guided tour, which explains the history of the settlers and pioneers who lived nearby. The preserve is at 1945 Athens Boonesboro Rd. Re-Live the Past at Fort Boonesborough It's a great time of year to learn something new, and the living history events at Fort Boonesborough are immersive, enlightening, and bring the past to life. Check out the Spring Trade Days on May 6 and 7 to find out more about life during the French-Indian Wars, including lead-ball casting, tomahawk throwing or period music. Or the Gathering of Descendants on June 24 is a great opportunity to find out about family history and pioneer life. Paddle Out on the Bluegrass River Run If you're hoping to explore the wilds this spring, the Bluegrass River Run on June 3 will give you a duck's-eye view. Starting at the beach in Boonesborough State Park, you'll be able to paddle up past the 60-feet cliffs of the palisades on the 6-mile Float Trip before celebrating in the festival zone near Proud Mary BBQ. Register for the event online and bring your own kayak, canoe, or paddle-board for the experience, or hire one at the site.
