With a population of a little over 36,000, the city of Richmond, KY is the sixth-largest urban area in the state and was an important town during the American Civil War. Richmond is close to several beautiful natural spots and big cities that can be visited in a day or a weekend with your friends or family. Pack your things, hit the road, and go on one of these memorable day trips.

1. Cincinnati, OH

Located a little over 100 miles north of Richmond, the city of Cincinnati is an excellent day trip destination for an urban getaway, a tour around historic districts, and a visit to some great restaurants. The largest metropolitan area in the state of Ohio attracts thousands of tourists from all over the country, who come here to see some of its most famous landmarks, including the Roebling Suspension Bridge, the Cincinnati City Hall, and the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.

Getting to the Cincinnati city center from downtown Richmond takes less than two hours by car, following route I-75 S. Once you are in the city, we recommend you to find a parking spot at the Central Business District, from where you can walk to most of the main attractions in the city center. Once you are done exploring the downtown, you can check out some less-known neighborhoods such as Pendleton or visit the neighboring cities of Covington and Newport.

 

2. Louisville, KY

The most populous city in the state of Kentucky is another great spot for a day trip from Richmond. Founded in 1778 and named after King Louis XVI of France, Louisville has become the cultural capital of Kentucky, with several different museums, historical sights, and tourist attractions that attract visitors from all over the region. In popular culture, Louisville is known for being the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken and the home of boxer Muhammad Ali.

The city of Louisville is located just 100 miles away from Richmond, making it possible to reach it in a little over an hour and a half by car. Once you are in the city and find a place to park in the downtown area, you can check out most of the area’s tourist attractions on foot. Some of the places you should not miss include the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Speed Art Museum, and the Muhammad Ali Center.

 

3. Daniel Boone National Forest

Spanning more than 700,000 acres, the Daniel Boone National Forest is the perfect day trip destination for anyone wanting to disconnect from the busy urban life and enjoy some quiet time in nature. This national forest receives more than a million visitors a year and offers different hiking trails, lakes, mountains, and pristine wilderness areas. Getting here from downtown Richmond takes a little under 40 minutes by car, following route I-75 N.
