Everything feels new once winter is over, which makes springtime the perfect season to try out new things. If you’re looking for fresh and memorable reasons to get out and about in Richmond, KY, check out our list of spring activities in the area.

1. Ride the Rails With Kentucky Railway Museum

If you’re yearning for some brisk spring breezes and scenic views of the Kentucky countryside, be sure to book one of the many tours at the Kentucky Railway Museum. As well as viewing an extensive collection of railway memorabilia at the site at 136 South Main Street, you’ll also have the chance to take a nostalgic ride along the L&N Historic Lebanon Branch.

Children will love a Day Out With Thomas on June 10, or you could relive the days of railroad dining on May 13 or June 3. And locomotive cab rides are available on June 3 and 24 for anyone age 13 or over. Check out the schedule and book online for an exciting way to make this springtime special.

2. Spray and Play With the Richmond Fire Department

If you’d like to make this spring memorable for the kids, the Richmond firefighters are here to help. From mid-June, they’ll be visiting various Richmond parks and using their hoses so that children can cool down and play in the spray. The first event will be held on June 14 at 2pm in Irvine-McDowell Park at 345 Lancaster Avenue, but there are plenty of other visits scheduled too.

3. Re-Live the Past at Fort Boonesborough

It’s a great time of year to learn something new, and the living history events at Fort Boonesborough are immersive, enlightening, and bring the past to life. Check out the Spring Trade Days on May 6 and 7 to find out more about life during the French-Indian Wars, including lead-ball casting, tomahawk throwing or period music. Or the Gathering of Descendants on June 24 is a great opportunity to find out about family history and pioneer life.

Fort Boonesborough is located at 4375 Boonesborough Road, and opens Wednesday to Saturday from 9 to 5.

4. Paddle Out on the Bluegrass River Run

If you’re hoping to explore the wilds this spring, the Bluegrass River Run on June 3 will give you a duck’s-eye view. Starting at the beach in Boonesborough State Park, you’ll be able to paddle up past the 60-feet cliffs of the palisades on the 6-mile Float Trip before celebrating in the festival zone near Proud Mary BBQ. Register for the event online and bring your own kayak, canoe, or paddle-board for the experience, or hire one at the site.
